When it comes to washing your dog, it can be hard to know how often to wash them - particularly if they are not the kind of dog that loves to roll around in mud and get dirty very often. It is best to have a bath time routine to keep your hound preen and sheen all year round!
It is important to take your hounds coat type into consideration, an oily coat may need bathing more often but a short haired dog could go for much longer without needing a bath. Consult your vet if you are unsure which category your hound fits into.
Washing too often can strip the fur of natural oils so be sure to keep that in mind as well - particular for those with a waterproof coat like labradors.
We generally recommend bathing once a month to keep your hounds fur in tip top condition and smelling fragrant and fabulous!
If you have a dog that likes to roll around and be adventurous then work around their activities and bathe as required. Our dear friend Anna Webb, one of the UK’s leading nutrition and behaviour experts for dogs, has shared her experience with her dog:
I have to wash my dear Prudence quite often, because she will love to lie in anything. It can even be stale urine on some grass! We'll just be walking along then all of a sudden, she'll just throw herself into a pile of stinky stuff and just roll in… unmentionables. So I probably wash Prue about once a week now.
It is totally dependent on your dog!
